She Points the Way — Built to Endure

"Somebody always knew the way."

A field at the end of the day. Seven people stop working and look up, because one woman has seen something past the treeline and is pointing at it. On the ridge, a rider waits.

Nobody in this picture is famous. That is the point. For every name history wrote down there were hundreds it did not — the ones who carried the message, who knew which way was north, who kept everyone else upright long enough to get there. They worked in cotton and they got people out.

The front is that moment. The back is what they were made of, four times over, across the field they worked: BUILT TO ENDURE.

This is an original illustration, not a photograph and not a portrait of any one person. It stands for all of them.
