Rebel, Rebel — The Breakout
"They called it rebellion. It was just people leaving."
Corn over your head in every direction. You can't see what's ahead and nobody behind you can see you — which is the only reason it works. The word sits above them and under them, twice, because it got said about them twice: once by the people they ran from, and once by the people they ran to.
Rebel was never their word for it. Nobody breaking for the treeline at first light thinks of himself as a rebel. He thinks about the next row, and the one after that, and how far the dogs sound.
We put it on the shirt anyway, because the word outlived the people who meant it as an insult.
