Officers with little or no medical training loaded you in the back and drove. The goal was to get you to the hospital. Keeping you alive on the way wasn't anybody's job.

In 1967 a community group in the Hill District decided to make it someone's job. Freedom House trained young Black men from the neighborhood, many of whom had been written off as unemployable, to deliver advanced emergency care in the field. Their training came from Dr. Peter Safar, a pioneer of CPR, and later Dr. Nancy Caroline, who built the program into the first real paramedic curriculum. They learned to read heart rhythms, run IVs, intubate, and shock a heart back into rhythm, at a time when most ambulance crews were drivers with first-aid cards.

Freedom House started answering calls in 1968, and the results spoke. Patients who would have died in the back of a wagon were reaching the hospital alive. Their training helped shape the national standards paramedics still follow today.

In 1975 the city replaced them with its own service. Most of the Freedom House medics were left out of it. The program ended. The standard they helped write did not.

You'll see them called America's first paramedics. Other cities were building programs in the same years, but no one else did it the way Freedom House did: with people from the neighborhood, for the neighborhood, at a level nobody expected from them. The legacy still answers.

The design

Front: America's First Paramedics.
