It wasn't, quite — a surgeon in St. Louis named Henry Dalton had done a similar repair two years earlier. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a sentence that doesn't hold up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHere's the part nobody disputes. Williams did it inside a hospital he had to build himself, because no hospital in Chicago would let a Black surgeon operate or train a Black nurse. He opened Provident in 1891 with an interracial staff and a nursing school, two years before the surgery that made his name. The operating room was the achievement.
